The book

How is this different from other personalized children's books?

Most personalized books just swap in your child's name. We do the opposite — we make YOU, the parent, the hero. We research your specific job (not just your job title), craft an original 20-scene story about what you actually do at work, and illustrate you as a character your child will recognize on every page. It's a book about why their parent is amazing, not a generic template.

How long is the book?

Each book is 20 fully illustrated scenes, plus a personal dedication page and an 'About Me' page featuring your real photo. Printed as a premium 8.5 x 8.5 inch hardcover — a substantial, keepsake-quality book.

How does the book end?

Every book ends with two pages no other personalized book has. First, a "So, what does Mommy, Daddy, or your grown-up do?" page that distills an entire job into one plain-spoken line a child can recite from memory, with no jargon. Then an "About the Author" page with the real photo, name, and job title of the parent who lived it, plus a short biography blurb. Together they turn the story into an answer your child can actually repeat when someone asks what their grown-up does.

What age is a WorkTale Book Company book for?

The stories are written for children of all ages. Younger children enjoy the illustrations and recognizing their parent; older kids follow the job explanations, which translate professional work into analogies a young child can picture.

Which jobs can you make a book about?

Any job. We've crafted books for nurses, teachers, doctors, firefighters, police officers, pilots, software engineers, pastry chefs, plumbers, electricians, truck drivers, farmers, accountants, marine biologists, home health aides, small business owners, and stay-at-home parents. If you can describe your work, we can turn it into a story.

Is my child in the illustrations?

No. Illustrations feature adults only. That protects your child's privacy and keeps the focus on the parent-as-hero narrative — your child is the audience the story is written for, not a character in it.

Can I add an audiobook?

Yes — choose the Printed Book + E-Book + Audiobook bundle and we'll produce a polished MP3 narration with a warm professional voice you select. Perfect for car rides or nights you can't be there in person.

Do I get a downloadable video of the book?

Yes. With the E-Book + Synced Audio or the full Printed Book + E-Book + Audiobook bundle, we render a downloadable flipbook video for every book. It plays through all 20 illustrated scenes with the narration synced to each page turn, in landscape (16:9), square (1:1), and vertical (9:16) formats. Save the files to your device once and watch them anywhere, anytime — even offline. The video is ready in your keepsake viewer a few minutes after your audiobook finishes.

Do I get a digital copy too?

Yes — every printed order includes the digital PDF for free, so you can re-read on a tablet, share with grandparents, or print extra copies down the line. Every book also comes with direct image downloads for social media sharing and storing to your device quickly.

Ordering & shipping

How much does a WorkTale Book Company book cost?

Book options start at $29 for the interactive e-book; e-book + audiobook is $49, printed hardcover is $59, and the full bundle is $79. Additional copies of the same book are $35 each. Customers outside the US see prices in their local currency at checkout.

How fast does it ship?

Your digital preview is ready within minutes of finishing the interview. Printed hardcovers are produced and shipped by a premium print-on-demand partner — most US orders arrive within 7 to 10 business days from approval. Digital orders are instant.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We print and ship to more than 200 countries and territories through our global print-on-demand partner, with local printing in several regions to keep delivery times short.

Can I see the book before I commit to printing it?

Yes. After you answer a few questions, we craft the full story and illustrations and show you a complete digital preview before any printing happens. Read every page, listen to the narration if you added it, and only proceed to print when you're happy.

How long does the interview take?

The interview process just takes a few minutes. The questions are short and conversational, and you can save your place and come back later — we email you a link to resume exactly where you left off. During the interview, we research your job in real time and recommend an answer to each question, making the process as easy as possible. It's amazing to see when our tools recommend an answer that's exactly how you would have answered it yourself — saving you time.

What if something goes wrong with my order?

We stand behind every book. If your printed copy arrives damaged, has a print defect, or doesn't match the preview you approved, email hello@worktalebookco.com within 14 days of delivery with a quick photo and we'll reprint and reship at no cost. No need to send the original back.

Can I return my book if I change my mind?

Because every book is uniquely personalized — your face, your career, your child's dedication — all sales are final once you click Approve & Print. That's why we built the full digital preview: read every page, listen to the narration, regenerate any illustration, and only approve when you're 100% happy. Damaged or defective books are reprinted free.

Customizing

What can I customize?

Everything. You can rewrite any line of the story, regenerate any illustration with a single click, edit the dedication, and tweak the 'About Me' page. Most parents love what we deliver as-is, but the book is yours — change as much or as little as you want before ordering.

What if I don't like one of the illustrations?

Just click 'regenerate' on that page and we'll create a new version, keeping your character consistent throughout. You can regenerate images on each page multiple times to find the one that feels right.

Can both parents be in a book?

Yes — each book is about only one parent. Our Family Bundle is a pair of companion hardcovers — one starring each parent's career — created from a single guided handoff flow, so each parent gets their own story to read at bedtime.

Does the illustrated character actually look like me?

Yes. You upload one reference photo and we use it to build a consistent illustrated version of you — hair, skin tone, glasses, uniform — that stays the same across all 20 scenes and the cover.

Privacy & safety

Are my photos safe?

Yes. Your photo is used only to craft your character illustrations. Once you approve your book for production, we keep the original photo for 30 days — long enough to fix a print or reprint issue — and then it is automatically and permanently deleted from our servers. Never sold, never shared. See our Privacy page for details.

When exactly is my photo deleted?

30 days after you click 'Approve & Print' (or your digital book is finalized). Approval starts a 30-day retention window; an automated daily job then deletes the source photo from our storage and wipes the link from our database. The illustrations remain — they're your book — but the raw reference photo is gone for good. Photos that fail our content checks are deleted immediately.

Do you use my photo or story to train AI?

No. Never. Your photo and story are used solely to produce your book. We do not contribute them to any training dataset, do not sell them, and do not share them with third parties beyond the secure services that print and ship your order.

Gifting & corporate

Can I give this as a gift?

Absolutely — Gift Cards let the recipient design their own book on their own time, so you never have to guess at details. Choose any package amount, add a personal note, and schedule the send date if you'd like. You can also build the whole book yourself as a surprise.

Is this a good gift for holidays and milestones?

It's one of our most popular occasions. A book that explains a parent's work to their own child is a keepsake rather than a consumable, which is why WorkTale Book Company is often given for back-to-school, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Father's Day, Mother's Day, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and other gift-giving holidays, as well as new-baby gifts, birthdays, retirements, and milestone work anniversaries.

Do you do corporate or bulk orders?

Yes. Companies buy WorkTale Book Company gift cards in volume for employee milestones, parental-leave gifts, family days, and client appreciation, with volume pricing at 10+, 25+, and 50+ codes and optional co-branding. See our Corporate gifting page.

How every WorkTale book ends

Every WorkTale book closes with two pages no name-swap personalized book has. First, a "So, what does Mommy, Daddy, or your grown-up do?" page that distills the parent's entire job into one plain-spoken line a child can recite from memory, with no jargon and no job description. Then an "About the Author" page with the parent's real photograph, name, job title, and a short biography blurb, so the illustrated hero is revealed as the real person the child knows. Why the parent is the hero.
